VIC: Pedestrian dies after being hit by truck

MELBOURNE, Dec 20 AAP - A 55-year-old pedestrian has been struck and killed by a semi-trailer while walking along a darkened stretch of freeway south-east of Melbourne.

Police said the Warragul man was walking in the middle of the left lane of the Princes Freeway at Trafalgar in the West Gippsland district when he was hit by the truck travelling in the same direction around 2.20am (AEDT) on Saturday.

The victim, who had been walking in an area without any lighting and was wearing dark clothes when the accident happened, died at the scene.

The 38-year-old truck driver escaped injury.

The death is Victoria's second fatality of the Christmas holiday road toll.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
